A Summer to Remember

Like many of my classmates, I spent this summer interning. And like many of those same classmates, and plenty of others in my generation, I felt it was important to find an internship that would allow me the opportunity to do more than just sit at a desk all summer. When I walked into AT&T on my first day, I had no idea I would be given that opportunity when I joined the community engagement team.

I was quickly tasked with organizing the annual Intern Day of Impact – a day which provides more than 500 interns across the company an opportunity to join their colleagues in giving back to the communities where we live and work. Over several weeks I worked with the team to plan events including cleaning the area surrounding local non-profits, serving food at soup kitchens or even packing books to send to children in Africa. On July 22, when I walked into the Dallas Zoo and saw the flood of blue volunteer shirts, I knew all of my hard work would pay off in a day that would stay with me for a long time.

As we got into our groups and began working together cleaning up the space and spreading mulch, I realized just how valuable volunteering as a team can be. My “squad” and I were not only helping our community, but building lasting friendships. While I knew I wanted to find a way to give back during my work this summer, I had no idea just how much I would get out of it.

I know my classmates will all have great stories to tell about their summer experiences. I’m grateful that mine includes having found a company that inspires its interns - and employees alike - to roll up their sleeves and support the community.
