This month, AT&T’s Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) team joined forces with AT&T’s Aspire Mentoring Academy and Junior Achievement to teach Bay Area high school students about the importance of being prepared for natural disasters and how technology can help. As an Aspire Mentoring Academy ambassador in the Bay Area, I was able to attend the event to engage with the students and learn some tips myself!

It was wonderful to see these students inspired to plan for their upcoming education and career decisions. That’s the power of caring adults and mentors, and my favorite part of participating in the Aspire Mentoring Academy.

On a sunny morning in Santa Clara, CA, Steve Poupos and his NDR team provided the students with an onsite NDR exercise in which they were given the opportunity to walk through mobile trailers that contained telecom equipment and the capability to back up the normal network in the event of an infrastructure outage. Within these technology trailers, students learned how AC power is distributed, hazardous materials are handled and satellites are used to provide localized cell coverage for locations stricken by natural disasters.

Throughout the presentation, the NDR team emphasized the connection and importance of STEM classes and how they apply to many career paths today. Perhaps most engaging was the Q&A session held by the NDR team, where the students asked important questions surrounding specific areas of study, financial and career planning and internship opportunities. It was wonderful to see these students inspired to plan for their upcoming education and career decisions. That’s the power of caring adults and mentors, and my favorite part of participating in the Aspire Mentoring Academy.
