To prepare for severe weather or potential disasters, consider the following:

  • Establish a family communication plan. Choose someone out of the area as a central contact, in case your family is separated. Most importantly, practice your emergency plan in advance.
  • Charge your wireless phone and get a portable phone charger ready in case of power outages.
  • Program local emergency contact numbers into your wireless phone.
  • Take advantage of the camera on your smartphone to take, store and send photos and video clips of damage to your insurance company.
  • Forward your home number to your wireless number in the event of an evacuation.

It’s important that you and your families fully prepare for any situation. Check out the following tips to better perfect your disaster preparedness plans.

  • Prepare your home. If you’re at risk for winter storms, install insulation and learn how to keep pipes from freezing. In hurricane-prone areas, consider installing hurricane shutters.
  • Pay attention to weather reports or sign up for your community’s warning system; the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio are also great options.
  • Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Don’t forget the needs of pets!
  • Keep important documents in a safe place or create password-protected digital copies.
