AT&T Boosting Service at the San Diego Convention Center with Superhero Lineup of Network Enhancements
“Super” Cell Towers on Wheels and Wi-Fi Meets the Needs of Large Crowds
SAN DIEGO, Calif, July 6, 2015 — Thousands of people dressed as their favorite comic book character are descending upon San Diego for Comic-Con International with their smartphones in hand. And, AT&T* is saving the day. The company is bringing in extra network support to make sure its customers stay connected.
AT&T is bringing in tools to boost capacity, so comic book and pop-culture fans have a great experience at the event. The company is setting up:
- A “Super” COLT (Cell on Light Truck) at the San Diego Convention Center
- A “Super” COW (Cell on Wheels) in the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego
- Free Wi-Fi for AT&T customers inside the San Diego Convention Center
“The two “Super” sites and Wi-Fi are being deployed to boost capacity and enhance the customer experience for thousands of comic book and pop culture fans gathering at the event. Innovative multi-beam antenna technology gives the cell sites their “Super” status – with each cell site providing network capacity double that of traditional, single beam antennas”.
Cell sites in the immediate vicinity of the San Diego Convention Center, including the cell sites inside the convention center, Super COLT and Super COW, will have double the 4G LTE capacity as compared to last year.
“Events like Comic-Con International are full of memorable moments that our customers want to share through text messages, pictures, status updates on social media and phone calls,” said Tammi Terrell, vice president and general manager, Southwest and Hawaii, AT&T. “We’ve been hard at work to help provide great coverage and fast speeds at Comic-Con International.”
AT&T’s focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond just 4G. AT&T customers can use AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots to connect at 34,000 places like popular restaurants, hotels, and stores. The company provides Wi-Fi access in more than 1 million locations around the world. **
AT&T invested more than $725 million in its San Diego area wireless and wireline networks from 2012 through 2014. Over the past six years (2009-2014), AT&T invested more than $140 billion in its wireless and wireline networks, acquisitions of wireless spectrum and operations.
