Upgraded Distributed Antenna System Provides Additional Wireless Capacity for Philadelphia Phillies Fans

PHILADELPHIA,  April 1, 2015 — When a big play happens this season at Citizens Bank Park, baseball fans can expect to enjoy an enhanced mobile experience as they pull out their wireless devices to share once-in-a-lifetime moments with friends and family.

As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced wireless devices and services, AT&T* has expanded its mobile Internet coverage at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies,  by completing the upgrades to the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that will help fans post selfies and share on social media faster than ever before.

A DAS installation consists of multiple strategically-placed antennas that distribute AT&T’s wireless network coverage throughout Citizens Bank Park, and will provide increased wireless capacity in crowded areas. DAS has the ability to provide enhanced, consistent wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations – terrain, building construction, etc. – or crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience.

The Citizens Bank Park DAS upgrades are part of a multi-year investment plan announced in fall 2012 to expand and enhance AT&T’s IP broadband networks. Through this investment, AT&T is supporting its customers’ growing desire for high-speed Internet access and new mobile, app and cloud-based services.

“When our customers head out to Citizens Bank Park to celebrate and cheer on the Phillies, we want to ensure they have a great network experience no matter what they’re doing – whether that’s making a call, checking email or sharing their favorite moments on social media,” said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid-Atlantic. “We’re continuing our investment in the local wireless network, and providing enhanced wireless coverage at Citizens Bank Park is just one way that we’re investing in Philadelphia.”

DAS technology helps improve the mobile Internet experience by shortening the distance a request must travel. The additional capacity also is expected to help improve call reliability, boost data traffic capacity and enable more consistent network access to help customers make the most of their AT&T devices.

AT&T invested nearly $550 million in its Philadelphia area wireless and wireline networks from 2012 through 2014.  These investments help to ensure that Pennsylvania residents continue to enjoy the best possible experience over the AT&T network, whether at home, at work or on the go.  AT&T’s network has the nation’s strongest LTE signal, ** and AT&T also has the nation’s most reliable LTE network. ***

“AT&T is taking the fan experience at Citizens Bank Park to the new level,” said Dave Buck, Phillies Senior Vice President, Marketing and Advertising Sales. “With this enhanced technology, our fans will be able to stay connected from their wireless and mobile devices even faster than before.”

AT&T’s focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G LTE to embrace additional connection technologies. AT&T owns and operates more than 34,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 1 million hotspots globally through roaming agreements. **** Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.
