AUSTIN, Dec. 11, 2014 – On the first day of U-verse® with AT&T GigaPowerSM service one year ago, Austinites immediately began downloading music and movies at some of the fastest speeds they had ever experienced. Those speeds continued to increase and now reach up to 1 gigabit per second. And within the first year of offering the company’s fastest Internet speeds available, AT&T has more than doubled the reach of the fiber network in Austin and surrounding communities.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of U-verse with AT&T GigaPower in Austin. Thousands of customers in Austin and surrounding communities aren’t waiting to get faster speeds. They’re getting #GigaPowerNow, and clocking speeds that reach up to 1Gbps. They are also experiencing AT&T’s most advanced TV services and will soon experience even faster in-home Wi-Fi.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to witness the reception U-verse with AT&T GigaPower has received from the Austin community,” said Dave Nichols, president, AT&T Texas. “We knew when we decided to launch our fastest fiber Internet in Austin that the tech community would rally around this service.  The reaction from consumers, tech enthusiasts, telecommuters, software programmers, and so many more has been electrifying.  We are proud to call Austin our first gigabit city.”

In January, AT&T committed to doubling the reach of the AT&T fiber network by the end of 2014 after consumer response to the December 2013 launch of the new fiber high-speed Internet service exceeded company expectations. The expansion was completed in September, three months ahead of schedule, and reaches tens of thousands of additional homes and small businesses in Austin and surrounding communities, including parts of Bastrop, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, Jollyville, Lakeway, Leander, Pflugerville, and Round Rock.

AT&T recently announced plans to offer increased Wi-Fi speeds in the homes of new and existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower customers. Existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower customers will be eligible to receive a new Wi-Fi gateway at no charge once available.

The U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network** offers:

  • Ability to schedule DVR recordings, watch more than 100 live TV channels in and out of home, and watch video on-demand TV shows on more than 30 smartphones and tablets.
  • Among the fastest Internet speeds available to consumers and small businesses in and around Austin.  With gigabit speeds, you can download 25 songs in one second.1
  • Access to cutting-edge TV services that include an enhanced DVR capable of storing up to 900 hours of SD or 330 hours of HD programming and the ability to record five shows at the same time.

Austinites can choose single, double and triple play offers on the U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network:

  • Internet 1Gbps: Internet speeds up to 1Gbps for $70 per month,*** includes waiver of equipment, installation and activation fees.
  • Internet 1Gbps + TV: Customers who also select U-verse TV will receive free HBO, HBO GO for 36 months, and HD service for $120 per month with qualifying TV services.  Offer includes a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
  • Internet 1Gbps + TV + Voice: Internet speeds up to 1Gbps, free HBO and HBO GO for 36 months, and digital home phone for $150 per month. Offer includes a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.

These offers are available for consumers in eligible AT&T GigaPower network locations in the Austin area.

In the past year AT&T also announced a major initiative to expand AT&T GigaPower  to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 markets nationwide. With today’s announcement, U-verse with AT&T GigaPower is now available to consumers and small businesses in the Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem markets. AT&T previously announced plans to deliver AT&T GigaPower to 12 of the markets identified in April – Atlanta; Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Chicago; Cupertino, Calif.; Houston; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; Overland Park, Kan.; St. Louis and San Antonio.

In addition, AT&T has committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the AT&T GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above the markets listed above.

President Obama’s proposal in early November to regulate the entire Internet under rules from the 1930s designed for voice services injects significant uncertainty into the economics underlying AT&T’s investment decisions.  As a result, the company has paused consideration of any fiber investments that would go beyond its DIRECTV merger-related commitments, which includes previously announced fiber plans described above, until the rules are clarified.
