AUSTIN, Oct. 13, 2014AT&T* is doubling down on Austin, giving more residents and small businesses than ever access to its fastest available broadband and Wi-Fi speeds. The company announced today it has transitioned all U-verse® with AT&T GigaPowerSM customers to speeds reaching up to 1Gbps and has doubled the reach of the fiber network in Austin and surrounding communities in a recently completed expansion – just months after the original launch in the live music capital.

AT&T upgraded the speeds of U-verse with AT&T GigaPower to up to 1Gbps, fast enough to download 25 songs in one second1 and an HD movie in 36 seconds.1 All existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower customers have been upgraded to the fastest speeds at no additional charge.

In January, AT&T committed to doubling the reach of the AT&T fiber network by the end of 2014 after consumer response to the December 2013 launch of the new fiber broadband service exceeded company expectations. The expansion was completed in September, three months ahead of schedule, and reaches tens of thousands of additional homes and small businesses in Austin and surrounding communities, including parts of Bastrop, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, Jollyville, Lakeway, Leander, Pflugerville, and Round Rock.

AT&T is also preparing to offer increased Wi-Fi speeds in the homes of new and existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower customers. The increased in-home Wi-Fi speeds are expected to double the speeds of generally available Wi-Fi from other providers today. Existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower customers will be eligible to receive a new Wi-Fi gateway at no charge once available.

Sales of U-verse with AT&T GigaPower in Austin and surrounding communities continue to exceed expectations.

“The response to our U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network validates exactly why we chose Austin as our first fiber broadband market, and why this expansion happened so quickly,” said Dave Nichols, president, AT&T Texas. “Austinites have a genuine appreciation for fast and efficient technology. They haven’t let us down and we’re thrilled to serve up even more fiber fast speeds, including over our in-home Wi-Fi network.”

For a limited time, Austin area residents who add a new AT&T wireless plan to a new or existing U-verse with AT&T GigaPower high speed Internet service plan will be eligible2 for a one-time $100 promotional credit on their AT&T wireless monthly bill.  The offer runs through Nov. 8, 2014.  Consumers must have a qualifying AT&T wireless plan and a U-verse with AT&T GigaPower high speed Internet plan for 45 days to receive a $100 bill credit.

The U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network** offers:

  • Ability to schedule DVR recordings, watch more than 100 live TV channels in and out of home, and watch video on-demand TV shows on more than 30 smartphones and tablets.
  • Among the fastest Internet speeds available to consumers and small businesses in and around Austin.  With Gigabit speeds, you can download 25 songs in one second.1
  • Access to cutting-edge TV services that include an enhanced DVR with 1 terabyte of hard drive and can record five shows at the same time.

Consumers can choose between two Internet offers on the U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network:

  • Premier***: Internet speeds up to 1Gbps for $70 per month, includes waiver of equipment, installation and activation fees.  Customers who also select U-verse TV will receive free HBO, HBO GO for 36 months, and HD service for $120 per month with qualifying TV services.
  • Standard: Internet speeds up to 1Gbps for $99 per month.

These offers are available for consumers in eligible AT&T GigaPower network locations in the Austin area.

Already available today in three markets, including Dallas and Fort Worth, AT&T has committed to building its AT&T GigaPower network in 12 new markets, including Charlotte, Cupertino, Greensboro, Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Nashville, Overland Park, Kan., Raleigh-Durham, St. Louis, San Antonio, and Winston-Salem.  In total, AT&T is exploring expansion to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 markets nationwide.

Additionally, AT&T committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above what the company announced in April.

The company also announced plans to open an AT&T Center for Innovation in Austin at 323 Congress. The new space, featuring 15,000 square feet and expected to open in 2015, will serve as a meeting ground and technology development center for Austin-area application developers, tech leaders, citizens and entrepreneurs – anyone interested in collaborating and designing solutions for a more connected community.

AT&T has invested more than $6.55 billion in its Texas wireless and wireline networks from 2011 through 2013. The company employs more than 35,500 people across the state, responsible for thousands of volunteer hours dedicated to community outreach activities, including several in the greater Austin area each year. AT&T also operates 63 AT&T retails stores in and around Austin.
