Preparing the Workforce of the Future

AT&T is moving to a software-defined, mobile-first environment. So the need to develop a pipeline of employees with the skills to succeed and to help us succeed has never been more critical.

But we also see a broader need to prepare students and those already in the workforce — no matter where they work — for success in the 21st century.

That’s why we and Udacity launched the Nanodegree program to equip learners with the basic skills needed for the Software Economy. It’s a key part of AT&T’s training and talent acquisition model. We’re supporting the program through AT&T Aspire, our commitment to prepare students for success in school and 21st century careers.

Today, at the White House Upskill Summit, AT&T committed to offering 500 Nanodegree scholarships through the nonprofit Year Up to students in the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Providence, New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Chicago. We’ll also hire 100 Year Up graduates at AT&T.

Year Up provides skills training to low-income young adults ages 18-24. The scholarships will empower students with high quality, affordable training for tech skills needed by today’s businesses.

Udacity offers Nanodegree credentials in front-end Web development, data analysis, full-stack Web development, iOS development and introduction to programming.

Nanodegree credentials cost less and take less time than traditional degrees. They make education more accessible and affordable. And they expand the talent pipeline to address the shortage of workers with technology skills.

More than 5,400 learners have enrolled in the Nanodegree programs – including more than 560 AT&T managers.

We’re committed to the Nanodegree program.  We’re committed to supporting Year Up.  And we’ll keep looking for ways to prepare a diverse pipeline of workers for 21st Century jobs. We hope that other employers will follow suit.
