1 long year, 10 disasters, 32 "true heroes"

When it comes to natural disasters, the past year has been one for the record books. Fires blazed out of control. Hurricanes, earthquakes and floods destroyed entire communities. Even mudslides made a dangerous mess of things.

And the record number of disasters has led to this year's record number of Whitacre Award winners: 32.

John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications, calls them the "true AT&T heroes."

Nominated by their colleagues, Whitacre Award winners go to heroic lengths to provide service – or avert disaster – in an extreme situation. Since its inception 10 years ago, the Whitacre Award has been our company's highest honor.
