Q: Can you give me an overview of the entire project?
A: The AT&T Discovery District will be a destination – an urban green space for those who work downtown, local residents and visitors. We’re planning a modern gathering place for arts, music, food and retail. The AT&T Discovery District will be a welcoming environment with well-lit, wide sidewalks and tree-lined, landscaped grounds. The Discovery District is part of a $100 million investment we’re making to improve our downtown complex both inside and outside.
Q: When will you start construction?
A: We’ve started construction on our Plaza and on Commerce Street between Field and Browder streets.
Q: What changes are you making as part of the Discovery District project?
A: We’re planning to transform the entire area around our downtown complex. AT&T Discovery District will be a first-of-its-kind “urban tech campus” in downtown Dallas – a showcase for new technology and innovation. The newly renovated grounds will offer an outdoor event space, public art spaces, restaurants, retail space, superior and free Wi-Fi and several amenities for those traveling through the area, like improved environmentally sustainable landscaping, fountains, seating, lighting and wider sidewalks, consistent with the Downtown Dallas 360 plan.
Q: Which restaurants and retailers are coming?
We’ll announce them as we finalize plans. But, we recently signed an agreement with Dallas restaurateur Richard Ellman, who will own and operate Hawthorn, the first of several restaurants planned for the AT&T Discovery District. The restaurant will be located in the lobby of the AT&T Whitacre Tower.
Q: When will you start construction on the rest of the project?
A: We’re still finalizing the construction dates for the other phases of the project.
Q: What will happen to traffic/parking during construction?
A: We’re discussing with the city the best way to re-route traffic and make accommodations for parking.
Q: When do you plan to complete the project?
A: Our goal is to be complete by late 2019.
Q: When will you begin closing off Jackson Street and making other street changes?
A: We’re still finalizing the construction dates for other phases of the project.
Q: How much is AT&T investing in the AT&T Discovery District?
A: We plan to invest $100 million to renovate our downtown headquarters, including exciting changes to our outside plaza, buildings and the surrounding area.
Q: What will the impact be on local businesses?
A: We believe the improvements and changes we plan to make offer the potential for considerable long-term economic benefits to area businesses, hotels, restaurants and the city.
