Team WA-SE-AI won the US$10,000 grand prize at AT&T/MCMC 2018 Malaysia Developers’ Day. The team won for the artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled waste recycling app it created during the 24-hour contest.

The winning app is a solution that can enable trash bins to automatically identify materials for recycling.

Organizers Jake Jennings, head of global trade policy of AT&T* (second from left) and Nur Sulyna Abdullah, chief officer of corporate strategy for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) (first from left) presented the award to Team WA-SE-AI on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.  

Fourteen apps came out of the event. The following teams also took home prizes:

  • 2nd Place – Team Critter-Watch for an AI-enabled app that generates heat maps of endangered species movements.
  • 3rd Place – Team Seek Sense for a traffic detection app that aims to reduce traffic accidents.
