NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 2014 – AT&T announced today a $10,000 donation to the East Harlem nonprofit Union Settlement as a part of the second annual #GivingTuesday, the national day of giving started by the 92nd Street Y. Giving Tuesday, which falls on December 2nd, has become a global phenomenon and a compelling demonstration of the effect of social media on giving. AT&T is relying on social media to drive their #GivingTuesday campaign, tweeting from the local AT&T handle, @MobilizeNY. AT&T‘s $10,000 donation, which accompanies their social media efforts, will go to Union Settlement’s College Readiness Program.

“AT&T is proud to be taking part in #GivingTuesday and to be making a donation to such a venerable New York City organization. Union Settlement’s commitment to ensuring students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive is admirable and important,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York State President, AT&T. “Our #GivingTuesday campaign speaks to the benefits of supporting Union Settlement and other initiatives that help students reach their goals. We are excited to participate in this important social media movement. We hope our participation inspires others in New York City, and across the country, to do the same.”

“We are thrilled to have AT&T taking part in #GivingTuesday again this year. Their generous support of our College Readiness Program is integral to the work we do at Union Settlement,” said David Nocenti, Executive Director of Union Settlement Association. “AT&T’s donation and social media participation in #GivingTuesday reminds us all of the importance of getting involved and paying it forward in our own communities.”

“We are so grateful for AT&T’s ongoing support of education in New York and beyond, and we’re thrilled to see AT&T’s continued participation in #GivingTuesday this year,” said Henry Timms, executive director of 92Y and founder of #GivingTuesday. “The work that AT&T is doing with Union Settlement is a great example of the way that the corporate sector can improve the lives of individuals and effect positive change in local communities.”

Launched in 1964, Union Settlement’s College Readiness Program connects students to counseling, academic enrichment and internship opportunities.  The program has assisted more than 20,000 students, 90 percent of which have been accepted to at least one institution of higher education and 20 percent of which have then gone on to pursue advanced degrees in Graduate School.   The program now serves more than 1,380 students each year offering SAT prep courses, college and career fairs, computer workshops, trips to college campuses, tutoring, counseling, and community service opportunities. These resources, made possible in part by donations like AT&T’s, provide students with the support they need to gain self-confidence identify and reach their goals and thrive in their futures.

The #GivingTuesday contribution is part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature education initiative focused on school success and career readiness. With an unwavering commitment to data-driven education outcomes, AT&T Aspire has impacted more than 1 million students since its launch in 2008.

AT&T Aspire funding recipients include non-profits, schools and school districts around the country that will expand programs to serve additional students, to add components to strengthen the program, or to replicate in new locations. Many of the awardees deliver integrated student supports, focus on college or career preparation, and/or provide mentoring or peer-to-peer supports to help students succeed in academics and beyond.
