Network Status

Winter Storm Gianna is delivering extreme cold and blizzard conditions along the East Coast with the highest impacts expected across the Carolinas, parts of Georgia, Virginia and New England. Overall, our wireless network is operating normally across these areas, at this time.

Rapid Response

In the days leading up to Winter Storm Gianna, we’ve pre-deployed portable generators, AT&T Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) assets and specialized disaster recovery personnel. The FirstNet Response Operations Group™ (ROG), led by former first responders, stands ready to support emergency communications and deploy backup solutions as needed. In addition, FirstNet liaisons are in contact with federal, state, and local officials on our response efforts to support first responders and the communities they serve.

Staying connected is critical, especially during severe weather. That’s why our teams are tracking Winter Storm Gianna and prepared to respond to any network impacts. We’re pre-deploying portable generators and Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) personnel to areas expected to be impacted by the storm.

Here’s how you can prepare before the storm hits:

  • Stay informed: Use mobile devices for weather updates if home phones go out
  • Charge ahead and save battery: Use power-save mode, turn off Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, delete unused apps, or switch to Airplane Mode
  • Update emergency contacts: Store key numbers in your phone (police, fire, hospital, family)
  • Limit non-emergency calls: High call volumes can cause delays; hang up and try again if needed
  • Try texting: Texts often go through faster than calls during network congestion
  • Use satellite if needed: iPhone 14+ (iOS 16.1/18): Emergency services & messages via satellite / Google Pixel 9: Text emergency services via satellite. For more information on availability and how to use, visit here for iPhone and here for Pixel.

Additionally, the FirstNet Response Operations Group™ (ROG), led by former first responders, stands ready to support emergency communications and deploy backup solutions as needed.

We’ll keep monitoring the situation and remain focused on keeping customers and first responders connected.

Utilize satellite communications if cellular coverage is not available.

If you have an iPhone 14 or newer that is updated to iOS 16.1 you may be able to connect with emergency services via satellite. If your iPhone 14 or newer is updated to iOS 18 you may be able to send messages and connect with emergency services via satellite. If you have a Google Pixel 9 you may be able to connect with emergency services through text via satellite. For more information on availability and how to use, visit here for iPhone and here for Pixel.
