Making Connections that Matter

I recently heard a story about one of my colleagues in California who was paired with a student through Aspire Mentoring Academy’s collaboration with We Teach Science. To allow the two of them to connect on a familiar level, she took the initiative to learn the native language of her mentee, a recent immigrant from the Philippines. As their relationship grew the student’s teachers and counselors noticed the student’s new found confidence both inside and outside of the classroom.

It goes without saying that students are most likely to thrive when caring adults encourage and support them. For some youth, those caring adults can be hard to come by.

It goes without saying that students are most likely to thrive when caring adults encourage and support them. For some youth, those caring adults can be hard to come by. The good news is that mentors can step-in and play an important role in helping a young person succeed. Through our work with AT&T Aspire and the Aspire Mentoring Academy, we see this brought to life every day.

AT&T Aspire is kicking off this school year by investing more than $20 million in students and teachers. Investment that supports organizations focused on mentoring such as Jobs for America’s Graduates, Communities In Schools and others. We’re also supporting innovative non-profits like We Teach Science and ICouldBe that pair students with AT&T employees and employees from other companies through mobile technology platforms. This technology enables caring adults and students to connect, regardless of where the students or employees live, go to school or work.

Through Aspire Mentoring Academy, our goal is to provide students with one million hours of mentoring by AT&T employees before the end of 2016. Thousands of my colleagues have responded to this call to action and I am proud to work for a company that supports this life-changing initiative.
